The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised former Labour Party presidential candidate and 2027 hopeful, Peter Obi, over his recent comments on the economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The party insisted that Nigeria requires policy continuity rather than a complete economic reset ahead of the 2027 general elections.
APC National Vice Chairman (South-East), Dr Ijeomah Arodiogbu, reacted to Obi’s interview on Channels Television, where the former Anambra State governor called on President Tinubu to step aside, describing the current administration’s direction as one of “failure and renewed hopelessness.”
In a statement issued on Monday, Arodiogbu said the Tinubu government had laid a solid foundation for economic recovery and urged Nigerians to support the consolidation of ongoing reforms instead of abandoning them for “another political experiment.”
He highlighted key policies such as the removal of fuel subsidy, exchange rate adjustments, and fiscal restructuring, arguing that although the reforms have been difficult, they are beginning to yield results and should be strengthened rather than reversed.
“The priority for Nigeria should be the consolidation of ongoing economic gains, not the laying of a new foundation,” Arodiogbu said.
The APC chieftain faulted Obi for what he described as a pattern of pointing out national challenges without offering practical alternatives that reflect current economic realities. He maintained that the country needs leadership committed to policy consistency, continuity, and the expansion of gains in revenue generation and infrastructure development.
Arodiogbu further argued that the South-East and other regions of the country would benefit more from the continued implementation of existing reforms than from discarding the foundation already laid.
He called on political leaders to place national interest above partisan considerations, stressing that investor confidence, infrastructure development, job creation, and economic stability depend on the continuity of well-designed policies rather than abrupt reversals.
Expressing optimism about the government’s economic direction, Arodiogbu said more Nigerians would begin to feel the benefits of the reforms as they mature through increased investment, improved productivity, and expanded economic opportunities.
He reaffirmed the APC’s position that Nigeria’s path to sustainable development lies in consolidating existing gains, refining policies where necessary, and delivering tangible benefits to citizens.
