The Lagos State Government has commenced the controlled demolition of the Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House, which was badly damaged by a fire on Christmas Eve last year.
The exercise, being managed by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), follows a detailed structural integrity assessment that declared the building unsafe for continued use.
In a statement, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the demolition is being carried out in accordance with international best practices for urban safety, disaster risk management, and public health protection.
He explained that the move was necessary to eliminate dangers posed by the weakened structure and protect residents, businesses, and road users in the area.
“The demolition is being executed in a controlled manner to minimise disruption while prioritising the safety of personnel and the general public,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
The affected building and its surroundings have been declared a restricted hazardous zone. The public has been warned against entering the premises, with market traders and customers specifically advised to stay away to avoid injuries from falling debris or sudden structural collapse.
All forms of trading, parking, loading, and commercial activities around the building have been suspended until the area is formally declared safe by relevant authorities.
The site has been fully barricaded with warning signs prominently displayed, while security personnel have been deployed to prevent unauthorised access and manage movement in the vicinity.
Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu assured that the demolition team is working closely with key agencies, including the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABSCA), Nigeria Police Force, LASTMA, Lagos State Fire Service, LASAMBUS, Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and other emergency responders to ensure effective crowd control and overall public safety.
He added that continuous public sensitisation efforts are ongoing to discourage residents, traders, and onlookers from gathering near the demolition site until the operation is completed and the area is certified safe.
